Preliminary assessment of Vietnam international merchandise trade performance in the second half of May, 2019

​The Vietnam Customs Statistics announced that in the second half of May, 2019 the total Vietnam’s exports of US dollars 12.19 billion and imports of nearly US dollars 11.56 billion resulted in a trade surplus of US dollars 634 million. Accordingly, the total value of export and import turnover of Vietnam in the second half of May was over US dollars 23.75 billion, up by 11.8% as compared to the first half of May-2019.  

Vietnam‘s trade-in-goods in the first 5 months of 2019 totaled US dollars 202.68 billion in value terms, climbed up by 8.8% as compared to the performance of the same period of last year.

In the view of Foreign Direct Invested (FDI) traders, the total value of exportation and importation in the first 5 months of 2019 reached USD 128.19 billion, up by 6.6% in comparison to the same period of 2018.

Export:

As compared to the first half of May-2019, second half of the month increase in the total export value (25.8% - USD 2.5 billion equally) is reflected by upturn in computer, electrical products (up by 34.1% - USD 426 million equally); textiles and garments (up by 32.3% - USD 380 million equally); telephones, mobile phones (up by 17% - USD 291 million equally); machine, tools and equipments (up by 33.5% - USD 216 million equally); foot wear (up by 19.7% - USD 154 million)…

Totally, in the first 5 months of 2019 total export value from Vietnam was USD 101.12 billion, climbed up 7.1% as compared to the same period of 2018 (equivalent to USD 6.7 billion in absolute value terms).

The first half to second half of May slight widen in the total of import value (0.1%) reflected upturn in petroleum products (up by 65.6% - USD 127 million); cashew nuts (up by 77.9% - USD 70 millions); cameras, still image (up by 40.8% - USD 38 million equally)…Shrunk occurred in some commodities such as: computer, electrical products (down by 7.1% - USD 157 millions equally; machine tools and equipments (down by 5.4% - USD 91 millions equally)…Import:

From January to second half of May-2019, total import value into Vietnam was USD 101.56 billion, went up by 10.6% as compared to the same period of 2018 (equivalent to USD 9.77 billion in absolute value terms).
