Preliminary assessment of Vietnam international merchandise trade performance in the second half of August, 2017

VCN- The Vietnam Customs Statistics announced that in the second half of August, 2017 the total Vietnam’s exports of US dollars 11.16 billion and imports of US dollars 9.6 billion resulted in a trade surplus of US dollars 1.56 billion. 

Accordingly, the total value of export and import turnover of Vietnam in the second half of August was US dollars 20.76 billion, up by 20.3% as compared to the first half of August-2017 (equivalent to USD 3.51 billion). Furthermore, in the first 8 months of 2017, Vietnam was in trade deficit of over USD 842 million, equivalent to 0.6% of total export value.

Vietnam‘s trade-in-goods in the first 8 months of 2017 totaled US dollars 270.91 billion in value terms, expanded by 20.9% as compared to the performance of the same period of 2016. In which, the total merchandise exports valued US dollars 135.03 billion, moved up by 19.3% and the total merchandise imports valued to US dollars 135.88 billion went up by 22.5%.

In the view of Foreign Direct Invested (FDI) traders, the value of exports and imports in the first 8 months of 2017 reached USD 176.96 billion, up by 22.8% (equivalent to USD 32.89 billion) as compared to the same period of 2016.

Export:

As compared to the first half of August-2017, second half of the month increase in the total export value (29.4% - USD 2.53 billion equally) is reflected by upturn in telephone, mobile phones and parts therof (up by 43.4% - USD 736 million); computer, electrical products and spare-parts and components thereof (up by 43.9% - USD 436 million); textiles and garments (up by 26.4% - USD 92 million)…

It was also showed by Vietnam Customs Statistics that export value of some commodities shrunk in the second half of August, which included: coal (down by 71% - USD 9 million); fertilizer (down by 31.7% - USD 5 million)...

Import:

The first half to second half of August increase in the total of import value (11.3%) reflected upturn in computer electrical products (up by 18.2% - USD 256 million); telephone, mobile phones and part thereof (up by 38.4% - USD 236 million); machine, equipment tools and instruments (up by 13.4% - USD 185 million); fabrics (up by 15.7% - USD 66 million...

A decrease occurred in importation of some commodities such as: cashew nut (down by 33.4% - USD 69 million); other base metal (down by 23% - USD 58 million); soya bean (down by 84.5% - USD 49 million)...
