Preliminary assessment of Vietnam international merchandise trade performance in the first 4 months of 2017

1. According to trade statistics of Vietnam Customs, in April 2017, a 2.0% downwards in total external merchandise turnover of Vietnam was recorded on month-on-month basis. In which, exports went up 1.7 %, to USD 17.54 billion and imports went down 5.4%, to USD 17.35billion. As a result, there was a USD 186 million surplus in Vietnam’s trade balance in this month.

2. From the beginning to April of 2017, Vietnam‘s trade-in-goods totaled US dollars 126.09 billion in value terms, 20.3% above the corresponding period of 2016. As compared to result of the first 4 months of last year, total merchandise exports value rose 16.8%, to US dollars 62.09 billion and the total merchandise imports value went up 24.0% to US dollars 63.99 billion. Accordingly, Vietnam’s trade balance in January-April period of 2017 was in the deficit of US dollars 1.90 billion.

3. Trade data disseminated recently by Vietnam Customs announced that the total value of exportation and importation by foreign direct invested (FDI) traders reached USD 82.65 billion in total from beginning to April 2017, up by 21.8 % as compared to the result of corresponding period of 2016. Total value of FDI exportation was USD 43.96 billion, went up by 18.0%. On import side, the total value of those companies was USD 38.69 billion, went up by 26.4%.​

Main Exports and Imports

4. On a month-on-month basis, an expansion in total merchandise exports was due to the upturns in telephones, mobile phones and parts thereof (up by USD 1.29 billion); foot-wears (up by USD 69.93 million); crude oil (up by USD 47.18 million). A decrease occurred in exportation of some commodities such as: computers, electrical products, spare-parts and components thereof (down by USD 354 million); textiles and garments (down by USD 229 million); other means of transportation, parts and accessories thereof (down by USD 107 million)…

5. On a year-on-year basis, exports expanded USD 3.14 billion. The main products, which contributed to the increase, were telephones, mobile phones and parts thereof (up by USD 1.32 billion); computers, electrical products, spare-parts and components thereof (up by USD 532 million); machines, equipments, tools and instruments (up by USD 293 million); textiles and garments (up by USD 144 million)…

6.On a month-on-month basis, decrease in total merchandise imports was due to the downwards of the commodities as follows: computers, electrical products, spare-parts and components thereof (down by USD 140 million); coal (down by USD 129 million); wheat (down by USD 123 million)…

7. On a year-on-year basis, imports went up USD 3.22 billion. The growth in imports was mainly contributed by the upturns of the following products: machines, equipments, tools and instruments (up by USD 1.19 billion); computers, electrical products, spare-parts and components thereof (up by USD 826 million); iron and steels (up by USD 245 million)…

Trading Partners

8. In the first 4 months of 2017, Vietnamese merchandise trade with trading partners in Asia was totaled USD 84.08 billion in value terms, which moved up 24.1% as compared to the same period of 2016. Trade-in-goods of Vietnam with America was followed, which reached USD 20.71 billion and increased by 12.5%. The values of other continents were Europe: USD 17.24 billion, up by 12.4%; Oceania: USD 2.27 billion, up by 21.6% and Africa: USD 1.79 billion, up by 28.1% in comparison with the same period of last year.

9 .For January-April period of 2017, 4 importing markets of Vietnam with turnover of over USD 4 billion were: The United States of America (reached USD 12.4 billion); China (reached USD 8.3 billion); Japan (reached USD 5.1 billion) and Republic of Korea (reached USD 4.4 billion).

10. According to the following chart, top 3 big sources of Vietnam’s imports were as follows: China (reached USD 17.1 billion); Republic of Korea (reached USD 14.4 billion); Japan (reached USD 5.1 billion).
